Founded in 2006 by Alexis Bhagat and Lauren Rosati, ((audience)) is dedicated to the advancement of aural arts by providing wide distribution and new contexts for the presentation of works by emerging and established sound artists, musicians, and composers.
We develop sustained relationships with the artists we present, supporting them through deep collaboration and continued support. We offer exposure to emerging artists and provide a venue for their work. We rely on co-operative partnerships with other institutions to present and enrich our programs.
Cinema for the Ear, our cornerstone program, is a rotating selection of 5.1 surround sound art works presented in movie theaters and organized in partnership with arts organizations worldwide. Locally, we also host Sound Off, an intimate salon and concert series of sound art and experimental music that connects New York audiences with composers, musicians, artists, and one another. In an effort to expand the distribution avenues available to sound artists, and to encourage critical writing on sound art, we recently launched a new publishing initiative, Audience Editions, which produces limited-edition surround sound works on DVD accompanied by a text from a guest writer.
((audience)) has worked with sound artists, composers, musicians, theorists and technologists including Natasha Barrett, MV Carbon, Tony Conrad, R. Luke DuBois, Anna Friz, Douglas Kahn, Richard Kostelanetz, Felix Kubin, Annea Lockwood, Ken Montgomery, JG Thirlwell, Gregory Whitehead, and many others. We have presented projects in galleries, cinemas, cultural institutes, art collectives, and at media festivals in India, Poland, Canada, California, Ohio, Maryland, and across New York State.
